During the State Visit of Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, to India from March 4–7, 2026, both countries announced a series of initiatives to deepen cooperation in clean energy, sustainability and circular economy solutions.

President Stubb, who is on his first visit to India in his current capacity, travelled to New Delhi and Mumbai and was accompanied by Sari Multala, Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment, Matias Marttinen, Minister of Employment, along with a delegation of senior officials and business leaders.

During the visit, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the 11th edition of the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on March 5, where President Stubb delivered the inaugural keynote address.

Both leaders highlighted the strong potential for collaboration in advancing clean energy solutions, particularly in areas such as low-carbon transition, energy efficiency, biofuels, smart grids and green hydrogen. They also emphasised the importance of joint efforts in circular economy practices, sustainable water management and meteorology.

To facilitate stronger collaboration, India and Finland welcomed the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Sustainability, which will bring together stakeholders from both countries to enhance cooperation on sustainability-related initiatives.

The two sides also underlined the importance of implementing the existing Memorandum of Understanding on renewable energy cooperation. The agreement covers key areas including bioenergy and waste-to-energy technologies, power storage, flexible renewable energy systems, green hydrogen, as well as wind, solar and small hydropower.

In addition, Bhupender Yadav, India’s Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment, Sari Multala, renewed the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation in New Delhi. Originally signed in 2020, the renewed pact will continue to provide a framework for collaboration on pollution prevention, waste management, climate change mitigation and adaptation, forest and natural resource management, and environmental monitoring.

The two countries also acknowledged ongoing collaboration under the Leadership Group for Industry Transition initiative and encouraged deeper engagement on climate action, circular economy and sustainable industrial transition.

Both sides recognised that the rapid deployment of smart energy solutions, including advanced metering infrastructure and digital grid technologies, has improved efficiency while also increasing cybersecurity risks to critical power infrastructure. They agreed to explore future cooperation in building resilient, reliable and secure smart grid systems.
