Greece, N.Y. (WHAM) — Police are investigating a overnight crash at a Greece gas station that killed a driver.

Officers responded to Kwik Fill on West Ridge Road near North Avenue around 3:05 a.m. Friday for a report of a crash with a person trapped.

Police said a vehicle had struck multiple fuel pumps and support pillars, damaging several pumps and the station’s canopy, before coming to rest against a concrete support pole.

“I woke up, and I heard what sounded like something was dragging across the road, so I looked out my window — but here, with all the trees, I couldn’t see anything,” said Patty Borrelli, who lives nearby. “I looked again and I didn’t see any cars or anything, so I thought maybe just somebody lost something on the road or a truck, whatever. But then five minutes later, I see all the ambulances and a fire truck and flashing lights until about 5 o’clock this morning.”

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s identity hasn’t been released. No other injuries were reported.

“I do feel bad for the poor person who passed today,” Borrelli said. “That’s never, never a good thing.”

Borrelli said it’s not uncommon to see crashes in the area.

“I’ve seen a lot of accidents since I moved here, at least four of them right in front of my house, and there have been quite a few across the street lately,” she said. “It’s kind of scary, really.”

Borrelli said she frequents the gas station.

“I go there all the time because they pump your gas there. When it’s cold, especially, I let them pump it,” Borrelli said. “I know most of the people over there, so I feel bad for them too today.”

The gas station has no timeline for reopening. Anyone who witnessed the crash or otherwise has information is asked to call the Greece Police Department at (585) 865-9200.
