GREECE, N.Y. — Freezing rain overnight caused slick spots and damage in the area, leading to a tree falling on Deming Street in Greece. News10NBC’s Chris Fortune reported live from the scene.

The road was cleared by the time Fortune arrived. He drove the length of Deming Street between Elmgrove and Long Pond roads to check for any other damage.

Neighbors in the area mentioned that it is common for ash trees to fall into the road. One neighbor said he noticed the tree in the road this morning when crews were cleaning it up and that they took care of it quickly.

At a local gas station, people shared their experiences. One man said it reminded him of an ice storm he saw as a kid. Another man shared that his wife saw someone fall on a sidewalk near their home.

“She saw a guy laying on the sidewalk because he was walking his dog and he fell, smacked his head and was bleeding all over so it was a little rough this morning,” said Eric Haskins.

Haskins said his wife helped the man who fell up and into his home, but he doesn’t know if the man went to the hospital.

“This morning, driving on Ridgeway, there’s a probably 16-inch tree trunk laying across the roof of a car and it just brought be back to that,” said Andrew Newbury.

Newbury mentioned he had to throw salt down because it was slick outside his home, but his kids still had a hard time staying on their feet.

A drastic change in temperature is expected with a potential high of 70 degrees on Saturday, likely interrupted by a thunderstorm and strong winds.

The freezing rain also brought down at least one utility pole and large tree limbs in the area.
