Denmark has inaugurated its first domestic aviation route powered partly by sustainable aviation fuel produced from used cooking oil.
The Aalborg–Copenhagen service, operated by Norwegian Air Shuttle, will run with a 40% SAF blend on all departures, marking a European first for a permanent route.
The SAF is produced from recycled cooking oil and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions on the route by around 3,000 tonnes per year.
The initiative forms part of Denmark’s national green aviation strategy, supported by public investment and policy incentives.
Government officials and industry representatives highlighted the importance of scaling up waste‑based fuels that can be used within existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. Used cooking oil remains one of the most commercially mature feedstocks for SAF production, though supply constraints are increasingly in focus.
The route is intended to demonstrate how waste‑derived fuels can play a practical role in aviation decarbonisation today.
