Alpine views. Lakeside promenades. Daytime wellness retreats segueing into evenings of oenophilic bliss. The chic—and often overlooked—French spa town of Evian-les-Bains is your answer when you want a luxury local experience without the crowds.

Off the beaten path but not out of the way, Evian-les-Bains is a leisurely hour’s drive from Geneva Airport. While the Swiss side of Lake Geneva tends to get most of the attention with vibrant cities like Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux, the quiet allure of Evian-les-Bains beckons from the lake’s French side to those in the know.

Perfect for a long weekend, travellers can expect an itinerary filled with shopping, spa treatments, outdoor adventures, and incredible dining. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

Where to Eat

Abundant with freshwater fish, locally grown produce, and legendary alpine cheeses, the area provides a brilliant palette for regional chefs. For a tribute to these ingredients, make a reservation at Les Fresques, a Michelin-starred experience led by Chef Patrice Vander, that offers the perfect taste of Savoyard classics.

Set in a palatial dining room lined with Art Nouveau frescoes, you can marvel at the majestic views of the lake over a perfect filet of arctic char pulled from those very waters earlier in the day. Expect white-glove service and the best homemade butter you’ve ever had.

Au Jardin d’Eden offers another taste of traditional cooking set against a cosy wood-panelled environment. Crispy sweetbreads and roasted duck breast add to the sense of warmth and are complemented by a deep wine cellar housing over 120 selections. Cheese lovers, prepare to rejoice at the dessert offerings.

For flavours of Italy, Umberto offers a more casual dining option, doling out generous portions of pasta inspired by regions in northern Italy that were once part of the Savoie kingdom. You can’t go wrong ordering one of their pizzas—made with dough that is fermented for 48 hours and baked in-house—or with their decadent risotto made with Sicilian pistachio pesto and topped with a whole (yes, a whole) burrata.

Where to Shop

No lakeside town would be complete without a charming main street. Here, Rue Nationale provides the obligatory drag, with stone streets flanked by cafes, bakeries, art galleries, and retail shops. While it offers a perfect afternoon of leisurely bopping about, there are two must-hits you’ll want to add to your itinerary.

For wine lovers, you’ll want to pack a dedicated carry-on bag for Les Cavistes Gourmands. Featuring an excellent selection of local, seasonal, and natural wines, it’ll be impossible to leave empty-handed. Plus, the approachable and well-informed staff are more than happy to provide recommendations to ensure you do not.

While there are many shops featuring a wide range of jewellery, clothing, and homewares, Fleur de Cannelle offers prices that are unmatched for the quality. A special shout-out to their discount rack where I bought my new favourite pair of gorgeous fleece-lined gloves for €13.

Where to Explore

You can’t properly experience Evian-les-Bains without dedicated time outdoors. After all, you’re surrounded by the majesty of the French Alps above and the calming waters of Lake Geneva below. From boating and watersports on the lake to skiing or hiking in Thollon-les-Mémises (located just 15 minutes outside of Evian-les-Bains), there’s no better way to feel connected to the region.

Also embracing the outdoors, the free local funicular offers a charming, scenic ride from the town centre to one of Evian-les-Bains’ highest peaks. Launched in 1907 and having undergone restoration efforts in 1998, visitors and locals alike can ride to the last station where you can enjoy a park stroll and stunning panoramic views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

When the sun sets, finally step inside for an evening of true entertainment at Casino Evian located right on the shores of Lake Geneva. Open every day, you’ll find traditional table games, electronic games, and slot machines; multiple restaurants and bars; live shows in the adjoining theatre; and numerous ongoing events.

For the ultimate guest experience, a visit to the property’s spa is non-negotiable. Inspired by the life cycle of evian® natural mineral water, guests can experience water treatments in all shapes, forms, and temperatures. Book a massage or a beauty treatment and try to reconcile with the fact that this can’t be your life every single day.
