Summary

  • KDE Plasma weekly update focuses on important bug fixes, not flashy features.
  • Fixes land across 6.6.2, 6.6.3 and 6.7 (due around June); you won’t wait long.
  • Clearer error when saving duplicate color schemes; bridged Ethernet icon and auto-hide panel bugs fixed.

Well, it’s that time of the week again. Every Friday, the KDE team brings us a smorgasbord of things everyone has been working on in KDE Plasma. It’s all open-source, meaning there are no hidden trade secrets or code obfuscated in proprietary software here, which means the team can collect everything that has progressed in the past week and present them as a nice end-of-week digest.

Usually, when we get these updates, there’s some cool new feature making its way to KDE Plasma. However, this week, the team was hard at work making sure everything is working properly and fixing some nasty bugs that’s been affecting some people. And while they’re not quite as exciting, they are really important for keeping KDE Plasma running smoothly.

Over on the KDE blog, the team has curated a list of everything we can expect from the desktop environment in the future. The fixes have been spread across versions 6.6.2, 6.6.3, and 6.7, so you won’t see them all appear in the desktop environment at the same time. However, given how 6.7 is coming around June, you shouldn’t need to wait too long to get all these fixes.

Here are some of my favorites from the list:

Trying to save a color scheme with the name of an existing system color scheme no longer shows an accusatory and unclear error message; now it tells you you’ll need to choose a different name, and then prompts you to do so. (Akseli Lahtinen, plasma-workspace MR #6316)

Fixed a regression that made bridged Ethernet networks show an inappropriate icon in the Networks widget. VLANs still show the wrong icon though; hopefully that’ll be fixed next week. Networking is complicated! (Nate Graham, KDE Bugzilla #516712)

Fixed a funny bug that made auto-hidden Plasma panels unexpectedly un-hide when the password dialog appeared while the “Dim Screen for Administrator Mode” effect was in use, which it is by default. (Vlad Zahorodnii, KDE Bugzilla #516864)

There are a lot more bugs that got fixes with this new wave, so be sure to check out the blog post linked above for a full run-down. Perhaps your personal bugbear issue has been fixed?
