An unexpected technical fault led to the outage of the Fenno-Skan 2 undersea power cable between Finland and Sweden. Officials from Fingrid and Svenska kraftnat confirmed the disruption, affirming that no signs of sabotage were detected.
The Baltic Sea region remains cautious following a series of similar incidents of outages in underwater infrastructure, often attributed to sabotage and accidents post-Russia’s Ukraine invasion in 2022.
Svenska kraftnat estimates the outage on the 800 MW line will last approximately 18 hours, assuring the public that operations should resume shortly. Both Finnish and Swedish operators investigate these technical casualties.
