US imposed sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilisers in 2021, a year after the fraudulent Belarusian presidential election in which Alexander Lukashenko, the country’s longtime leader, was once again declared the winner.
When the sanctions took effect, US companies had to end their transactions with Belarusian potash fertiliser producer Belaruskali.
The European Union introduced sanctions on Belarusian fertilisers in 2022. Lithuania stopped Belarusian fertiliser transit in February 2023.
