Malta International Airport will expand its international connectivity this summer with several new routes and increased flight frequencies, including the introduction of the first direct flights between Malta and the United States.

The airport’s newly published summer flight schedule highlights a series of developments aimed at strengthening links with key international markets.

The most significant addition is the entry of Delta Air Lines, which will become the first American carrier to operate direct services from Malta. Between June and October, the airline will run three weekly flights connecting Malta with New York.

Northern European connectivity is also set to improve, particularly across Scandinavia. Norwegian will expand its operations with a new route to Billund in Denmark.

The airline will also increase the number of flights to Oslo and Helsinki during the summer season. Meanwhile, Ryanair will extend its direct service to Gothenburg in Sweden.

Further connections are being reinforced elsewhere in Europe. Air Baltic will double its weekly flights between Malta and Tallinn, increasing from one service to two per week. At the same time, both Ryanair and WizzAir will continue to expand their Mediterranean networks with direct flights to Tirana, the capital of Albania.

Links with the United Kingdom, one of Malta International Airport’s largest markets, are also growing. easyJet is launching additional services to Glasgow and Newcastle, while Jet2 will introduce a new route to London Gatwick Airport.

Passenger traffic data for February reflects the strength of Malta’s aviation sector. A total of 658,328 passengers travelled through Malta International Airport during the month.

The busiest day was 15 February, when 30,875 passengers passed through the terminal following the weekend that combined Carnival celebrations and Valentine’s Day.

Seat capacity for February reached 806,540, representing a 15.8% increase compared with the same month in 2025. Aircraft occupancy also rose, with the seat load factor climbing to 81.6%, an increase of 1.1 percentage points year-on-year.

Despite the strong start to the year and the enhanced connectivity offered by the new schedule, the airport will continue to closely monitor geopolitical developments. Its Traffic Development team remains in regular contact with partner airlines, particularly those operating routes to countries affected by ongoing conflicts.
