Phone needs to be unlocked. And reader is usually at top of phone. Does work when everything aligns.
Yeah I think it’s the same as scanning the QR code at the top of the sign. Takes you to the live stop info

100% it should work unless the device has been damaged which it doesn’t look like it has from the front photo.
