>**Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz**, the world’s most important energy chokepoint that carries about one-fifth of all crude oil, according to two people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue.
>The mining is not extensive yet, with a few dozen having been laid in recent days, the sources said. But Iran still retains upward of 80% to 90% of its small boats and mine layers, one of the sources said, so its forces could feasibly lay hundreds of mines in the waterway.
>Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which now effectively controls the strait along with Iran’s traditional navy, has the capability to deploy a “gauntlet” of dispersed mine-laying craft, explosive-laden boats and shore-based missile batteries, CNN has reported.
>The IRGC previously warned that any ship passing through the strait would be attacked, and the channel has effectively been closed since the start of the war. The state of the strait has been described to CNN [as a “death valley”](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/09/business/oil-iran-strait-navy-economy) given the risks involved in transiting.
>US officials said today that the US Navy had not escorted any vessels through the strait, though President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration was looking at options to do so.
>President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday that “if Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY!”
>He added that “if for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before. If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction!”
>Following Trump’s post, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth [posted on X](https://x.com/PeteHegseth/status/2031472926331920575) that “at the direction of President Trump, u/CENTCOM has been eliminating inactive mine-laying vessels in the Strait of Hormuz—wiping them out with ruthless precision. We will not allow terrorists to hold the Strait of Hormuz hostage. To the weakened Iranian regime: you have officially been put on notice!”
>Trump also said during a Monday press conference that “the Strait of Hormuz is going to remain safe. We have a lot of Navy ships there. We have the best equipment in the world inspecting for mines.”
>Nearly 15 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude production, plus another 4.5 million bpd of refined fuels, are now effectively stranded in the Gulf, CNN has reported, and producers like Iraq and Kuwait have no alternative to shipping oil through Hormuz. The G7 group of large economies have hinted they could move to release more oil to try to offset the shortages.
>Uncertainty surrounding the ability to move oil through the waterway appeared to be causing severe volatility on the crude oil market on Tuesday, with the [price per barrel fluctuating](https://www.cnn.com/business/tracking-oil-gas-prices-vis) between more than $90 and less than $80 in a series of peaks and valleys.
then later trump posted;
>I am pleased to report that within the last few hours, we have hit, and completely destroyed, 10 inactive mine laying boats and/or ships, with more to follow! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Is this like mining in Cambodia where it becomes dangerous for years to come even after clean up efforts or would it be relatively easy to remove them after because the mines are trackable etc?

A few dozen mines is a signal, not a blockade. Iran is showing it can escalate further without actually closing the strait yet.

How can they do that? They have no navy according to very reliable sources on Truth Social.

No worries! Trump has already dedicated $20B to insure tankers and other cargo vessels in case they get blown up by Iranian ordnance.

Iran saw our president walking back because he doesn’t like seeing the market drop to much and basically punked the U.S. with mining the straight basically making it unusable without mine removal now. Queue markets in free fall with this news.

Mining the straight has been one of the strategies Iran has indicated it would employ in response to any US actions for a long time. This has also been something US forces have been well aware of and keen to watch for and identify just as long. What will be interesting will be the response. Will the straight be cleared for use or will this require a diplomatic joint solution?

Another concern is that the US Navy has 4 (four!) active mine hunting ships currently (the Avenger class). While the Littoral Combat Ships are being developed as replacements, I’m not aware of any that have come online with the anti-mine countermeasure package yet (if someone knows differently, I’ll defer to them). That’s a lot of water to sweep… and those ships are not designed to go into a hot threat environment alone.

So Iran is messing with the shipping channel after …. US and Israel started bombing them, killed 160 school girls, killed their supreme religious and political leader + a bunch of other senior people in their government and Israel has threatened their next leader with assassination.
I’m not defending the Iranian regime – but surely this was one of the most predictable outcomes from what US and Israel did?

This is one of those things in war you do not return from, mining the straight is a sign they expect the war to last alot longer or for things to escalate very fast, you cannot easily remove mines but you sure can deploy them easily, if they are able to deploy even a few hundred it is enough to cause chaos
They did not do it day 1 because by doing this they are causing harm to them selves, it is an act where they believe the harm to the enemy is greater then the harm to themselves
