Time Out names Melbourne the best city in the world – but is it more ‘vibes’ than hard data? | Melbourne | The Guardian https://share.google/Hhvwohs2zKba2t7Nt
If you see London and NY in the top 10, you know what kind of list we are looking at…

Best city in the world…for Alcoholics and Eaters (feeders?).

It sure felt like it over the weekend with so many events going on and what seemed like a million people having good time.

Time Out puts out these lists every couple of months. That’s how we have chaard being listed as a top burger in the world and high street in Northcote being the coolest street in the world.

The Melbourne CBD is slowly recovering from the Pandemic hit . The Metro Tunnel adds more services , also some challenges . For the majority of tourists Melbourne is cheaper / less crowded than Europe / the US and overall safer , 3 1/2 hours drive to the more remote locations/ places of interest . Lots more work to do like upgrading V-Line outer rural services/ Bus services and the Airport Rail Link

Moved here in October from the U.K. it certainly feels a lot nicer to live and generally enjoy than any city I’ve spent time in back home.
Seems to always be an event on, food scene is amazing, coffee scene good, public transport is great, a few issues with those with mental health issues on the streets but every city has that – much worse in Canada and US.
Just my opinion of course.

I have always thought Melbourne is a nice place to live. I can list all its obvious faults, which have been talked about many times. But it’s not a bad city as far as big cities go.
But The Best? There are cities that are far more dramatic and awe inspiring. Places that matter in the world. Melbourne is just nice.

More vibes. The best city in the world is Doha, followed by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi

It’s because we had machete bins (only city in the world to have them). Which other city in the world can claim that?

These awards tend to go thru a fairly predictable series of rotations… I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of pr/media scam.
Melbourne is great, it’ll still be great when it drops in a year or two. And then back up again.

I came here some 25 years ago for a half year stint. Knew within two weeks I didn’t want to live anywhere else.

How is that even possible with all the machete attacks going on

I don’t know about the best, but I moved here from Auckland 3 years ago and it is miles miles better. Whatever complains people have about transport or cost of living, Auckland is even worse.
But even then Auckland is probably better than like Cape Town or crime ridden area. Auckland is still okay.

Sydney’s property prices alone pushed it down 20 spots.

The MCG and the greatest tram network outside the former Soviet Union but the best of the best? These guys need to travel more.
One city from the small number of countries I’ve visited: Valparaiso, Montreal, Vienna, Seattle, Montevideo, Seoul, Bilbao*, Bergen, Hamburg, Porto and Rosario.
( * Spain alone has many contenders but Bilbao’s trams rolling along pretty streets remind me of the Paris end of Collins St! )

Must be because of all those people moving interstate because of how bad Victoria is
