As a one off event this would be really interesting and probably give the economy a boost. Normally you have to pay a lot of money to host an F1 event so to get one free would be a pick-up.

The only place F1 would want to do it is over the Harbour Bridge. But it’s approaches are too steep for F1 cars. So there will never be a Sydney F1.

Maybe we could have a F1 public holiday like Melbourne does with their AFL and Melb Cup

Having a quick read of the article ad I was wondering about Eastern Creek raceway (now known as Sydney Motorsport). It is a grade 2 track but F1 requires a grade 1.

Just to clarify, no one in the govt or tourism has asked for this. Just Business Sydney and Business Western Sydney, who are basically a union of businesses leaders despite their ~~option~~ opposition to unions
Not even the Australian Racing Drivers Club thinks this is a viable option right now.

    Edit: Typo

I’d predict around the scg/centennial park/anzac ode area. Reasonably flat, good options for turns, iconic, centre of the city.

the motorways connect in a giant circuit. dont know where they’d stick the etag though?

  8. Realistically I can’t see it happening.

But this is Reddit and for that I say do it over the Harbour Bridge. And why not loop back in the tunnel? Everyone loves the tunnel at Monaco so let’s extend that! If Mario Kart could work it out then so can the FIA.

Olympic Park, Thats about as close as they will get to the Street Circuit hopes they want.

The previous circuit was abandoned for cost so the state would have to be willing to lose $100m+ per year upfront. Melbourne gets 350k minimum per weekend and still costs the state $80m upfront.

  10. Yeah the only track that would excite people likely goes over the harbour bridge and down around the ED

And that would really mess up the city

  11. Harbour Bridge, Cahill Expressway, Western Distributor, Goulburn Street

Frame it as the southern hemisphere’s Monaco, bribe the higher ups and F1 might just go along with it

  12. All the people saying the Harbour Bridge; no way. If the government and locals get upset about a single half a day protest on the bridge, they would be catatonic over an entire weekend of bridge closures.

  13. If sydney hosts a Grand Prix, the NSW Gvernment would probably make sure the course follows as many toll roads & passes as many speed cameras as possible so they can raise revenue…..lol

  14. That’s just wishful thinking unfortunately. Sydney does not have an F1 grade track, and it’s laughable to suggest that the govt would be able to whip together a street circuit out of nowhere with no planning in a matter of weeks. Even if there were a feasible option, why would F1 travel all the way back to Australia when they can just stage a race in Europe or Asia at one of the many F1 spec permanent circuits?

  15. Bathurst is the only raceway I can think of and common sense tells me different types of racing mean different types of tracks

I’m sure enough profit is made from gambling that they can whip something up

Hickson Road up through The Rocks, down past Circular Quay down to the Opera House, around the roundabout down into the Opera House carpark then up Macquarie St, right at Bridge Street then Grosvener, left at York, right at Margaret to Napoleon Street back onto Hickson Road.

That shouldn’t cause too much chaos.
