Let me add: no one has any idea why it is called that, the leading theory is because from a bird’s eye view it looks like a Cyrillic Š, or a rotated E. Since they probably couldn’t agree on whether it was E or Š, we pronounce it as Eš, but it is officially referred to only as Š.
