BAY & GENESEE COUNTIES, Mich. (WNEM) – Consumers Energy is unveiling a new strategy it is touting as a way to save customers money.
“We announced that we will be building two new natural gas plants on current facilities that we already own that are being repurposed, and by doing that, it’s the most cost effective, cleanest way that we can provide reliable energy to our customers,” said Matt Johnson, Media Relations Specialist at Consumers Energy.
Johnson said Consumers’ Integrated Resource Plan will repurpose the Karn Generating Facility in Bay County and another facility in Genesee County’s Thetford Township to deliver on-demand power when customers need it most, adding that the plan will not increase customers’ bills.
“Those are locations we already have resources available to us,” said Johnson. “Felt like those are the places we can do it most affordable and cleanest way possible to provide reliable energy in the places we need to. The plan that we’re presenting drives costs down for customers by taking into consideration how data centers are going to paying for a lot of those infrastructure costs.”
Consumers said the plan’s investments in Bay and Genesee counties will enhance the tax-base by nearly $19 billion.
The Public Service Commission still needs to approve the plan, which could take up to a year.
