Latvian Television’s ‘Latvian Code’ (Latvijas kods) documentary strand offers a kaleidoscopic picture of life in modern Latvia, and comes complete with English-language subtitles.

In Pretstraume (Countercurrent), directed by Kārlis Lesiņš, we follow the work of the Šendeļevs family, which is closely connected to the underwater world. For them, it is not just a job — it is a mission: to make the Baltic Sea, one of the most polluted in the world, cleaner and more alive.

At the bottom of the sea lie not only sunken ships and planes, but also thousands of lost fishing nets — the so-called ghost nets that silently kill fish, seals, birds and other marine life. The Šendeļevs and their colleagues dive into the depths to find these nets and bring them to the surface.

Daughter Valentina follows in her parents’ footsteps, but her dreams are still searching for her place in the world. She does not yet know whether the path will remain at the bottom of the sea or take her somewhere else entirely.
