North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile toward the East Sea on Saturday.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch took place earlier in the day. The military said it is analyzing the projectile’s specifications and flight range.

The North previously launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea on January 27.
If the latest projectile is confirmed to be a ballistic missile, it would mark the first such launch in 47 days. It marks the North’s third missile launch this year.

South Korea and the United States have been conducting their joint military exercise, Freedom Shield, since March 9, with the large-scale drills set to run through March 19. The launch is widely seen as a show of force in protest of the exercises.
