My mom bought a printer 5 years ago and has never been able to hook it up because it requires a credit card… ( luckily the library still does printing for 5 cents a page.)

  2. In my region the replacement ink cartridges cost almost as much as buying a whole new printer. That’s not a business model, that’s a hostage situation.

No surprise their firmware is violating sustainability rules — the entire ink cartridge ecosystem is designed to generate maximum waste.

  3. In 2009 I bought an HP Webcam. It stopped working after less than a year. It had a 1 year warranty so I called expected an easy replacement. They refused to honor their warranty. I haven’t bought a single HP product since. I’ve stopped my office at work from buying HP. I know I haven’t made a dent in their bottom line, but fuck them.

    Literally fuck hp.

Get a laser printer from a brand that doesn’t expire the toner. It will last forever.

I think mine is a Brother. Canon makes a decent one too.

  5. HP has been pulling this stuff for years and somehow keeps getting away with it. bought a laser printer specifically to get out of the ink subscription trap

  6. I used non-HP cartridges with my HP Printer for years because their own cartridges were super expensive. Then they blocked the use of those cartridges with a firmware update.

Now I have a Brother printer with inktanks. One refill of black and all the other colored inks with original brother ink costs me as much as one HP cartridge (!), printer works like a charm. Fuck HP.

  7. I have an OKI color LED printer. The current toner cartridges are three years old, and it works fine.

I can’t figure out why people would want an inkjet printer. Color LED ones are cheap, hassle free, and the toner will outlast us all.

Having worked for Hewlett Packard support, I know not to buy their products. I’d share details, but I’m not overly fond of NDA litigation. Let’s just say this article is twenty years too late.

Government all over the world should ban this kind of Corporations’ greedy behavior by locking their functions of things people already purchase because people don’t want to be extorted further by using their high price supplies.

  9. My HP Color LaserJet has been working fine since 2010. Big reason I have it – HP laser printer products are beasts that last forever. I still have a fully functional monochrome printer from 1998.

Their “smart” toner cartridges are a fairly new thing. And easily circumvented with 3d party refill kits, at least that’s been my experience. I’ve refilled my cartridges countless times by now.

The key is also to not upgrade the firmware, LOL.

I do hate inkjet printers with passion, though.

I’m confused by some people’s reaction regarding HP’s Instant Ink – well actually, I totally get it, but I’m confused people don’t yet realise something. To be clear, I had the same “absolutely-fuck-this-corporate-c*ntishness” attitude – but then I realised I’d misunderstood the whole thing.

Just incase some may not get it, you can buy normal cartridges for the printer from HP and 3rd party manufacturers (for cheaper – and every bit as good), non-subscription ink like a regular printer that expires only once drained or dried – no limits. The subscription is specifically for those who want HP to handle the refills automatically when the printer sends HQ a heads up that you’re running low. So you never have to worry about shopping for ink ever again – it’s just delivered as if Hedwig dropped by. It’s just a nice-to-have if you wanna pay a bit extra for the convenience. You are NOT obligated in any way to buy an Instant Ink subscription.

The caps they put on e.g.. 10 pages per month, ISN’T a cap if you actually print within that per month. If you print fewer pages p/m than that, Instant Ink isn’t FOR you. So they do the caps to make sure you’re not skimping on the service charge. ie. paying £1.99 but murdering the ink like a madman. Does this make sense? It’s actually quite good, if you’re in to that – which I’m not. I don’t print nearly enough to justify it. It’s no different from Amazon Prime in a way.

I got an hp printer that had a subscription for number of pages … it also didn’t work well. Last time I bought an hp product in my life. Was so happy to bin it. Now happy with cannon

  12. I have a brother laser printer and its over 15 years old and I have replaced the drum and the cartridges all with generic ones and it keeps printing. I have printed over 9k pages on this thing. Like the energizer bunny it just keeps going and going and going…

This printer cost me $50 to buy originally.

I would not buy anything else.

I stopped using and buying HP garbage. I was forced to open an account, connect the HP printer to internet so it can force me to replace ink cartridge when it thought was needed. Fuck HP and other predatory companies.
