I'm a Melburnian and I'm not sure who I've missed this gem till now.

  1. Looks beautiful, I have to check it out for myself. I have always wondered how many potential bombs there are left unexploded there.

Did you visit the Harold Holt memorial?

  2. It’s likely the first Allied shot fired in WWI came from Fort Nepean: a German merchant ship SS Pfalz tried to escape from Port Phillip Bay just after Britain declared war on Germany.

On the other side of the Heads Midshipman Richard Stanley ‘Stan’ Veale hoisted the international maritime signal flag, H. The ‘H’ flag told Fort Nepean that Pfalz was a hostile vessel. This effectively gave the order to fire a warning shot across the bows of the Pfalz. The captain returned the Pfalz to port and surrendered.

  3. Hopefully one day they’ll extend the freeway from Rosebud to Portsea and Point Nepean!

That last bit of peninsula has a pretty temporary feel. Few more decadesof the surf beating at it and teh fort will be on an island.

Wider heads on the bay could change water flow and change beachscapes all over the place.

I’m a regular hiker and this is one of my favorite hikes! Thanks for the gorgeous photos

There are many many people in VIC who have never been to this gem. What made you eventually go?

Thank you, great photos. Only learned of this hike a year or two ago via SBS Great Australian Walks with Julia Zamero. On my list to do it.
