On the eve of the German occupation of the island of Hvar in early 1944, the partisans, in agreement with the church elders of the Franciscan monastery, decided to save and safely store the famous painting ‘The Last Supper’ from the 16th/17th century. st., large dimensions 8 x 2.5 m.
With the help of Hvar carpenters, the painting was packed and sent to free Vis and then transferred to Bari in southern Italy under the control of the Allies.
After the liberation of Hvar on January 16, 1945, the valuables were returned to the monastery and the painting was placed in its old place on January 20, 1945 under the supervision of the painter Vjekoslav Parać.
We present photos from the handover of the painting ‘The Last Supper’ to the guardian of the Hvar monastery, with Dr. Stjepan Gunjača and Vjekoslav Parać being recognized in the photos. (Source: Facebook)
