Taiwan has taken a countermeasure after South Korea failed to address Taipei’s demands to rectify its electronic arrival cards listing Taiwan as part of China.

According to local media, including the Taipei Times, on Wednesday, the Taiwanese foreign ministry announced that it changed the nationality for South Koreans on Taiwan’s Alien Resident Certificate from “Korea” to “South Korea” from March 1, in line with the principle of reciprocity.

South Korea’s e-Arrival card system lists Taiwan as “China (Taiwan)” in the “point of departure” and “next destination” sections.

The ministry then warned that if Seoul fails to change such label by March 31, Taipei will apply the same measure it has applied for the Alien Resident Certificates to the Taiwan Arrival Card.

The ministry said South Korea has failed to change the label though it has maintained close ties with Taiwan for a long period of time in the areas of the economy, culture, tourism and human exchanges.

It then urged Seoul to swiftly make such change in line with the principle of mutual respect and equality.
