They were the 11.55am, Saturday 9 October 1982. Not just any day: inside the Synagogue of Rome there were approx 300 peoplegathered to celebrate Shabbat, several bar mitzvahs and the Shemini Atzeretat the end of the Sukkot holiday. That was the day chosen by a commando of terrorists linked to the group led by Abu Nidal to carry out one of the bloodiest attacks in the capital. The same commando had already hit the restaurant Jo Goldenberg in Paris, killing 6 people and wounding 21 others. Now, almost 48 years later, the Rome Prosecutor’s Office, with prosecutor Lucia Lotti, has closed the investigation on the matter. The accusation is massacre for terrorist purposes and the investigators are able to give a name to the members of the group, who join the only one already known: Al Zomar Osama Abdel, sentenced to life imprisonment, fugitive. The notice was served on Abou Zayed Walid Abdulrahman, 68 years old, lived in France, Abed Adra Mahmoud Khader, 71 years old, palestine resident in Cisgiordania, I am a palestine resident in Giordania, Al Abassi Souheir Mohammad Hassan Khalil, 74 years old, Hamada Nizar Tawfiq Mussa, 65 years old, Abu Arkoub Omar Mahid Abdul Rahman, 66 years old. The group also included Alhamieda Rashid Mahmoud alias Fouad Hijazy, Maher Said Al Awad Yousif alias Arabe El Arabi Tawfik Gamal, now deceased. Officers from the area investigated Central Directorate of Prevention Police.

Five minutes of terror, 40 injured, a 2-year-old child left on the ground: the only victim of the attack, Stefano Gaj Taché, was killed by a splinter of a hand grenade.

The carried out in the Roman investigation it arrived thanks to Parisian magistrateswith which the Rome Prosecutor’s Office has created a joint investigation team. Because it was not the first time that the commando had struck in Europe: on 9 August 1982, in Paris, in the Jewish quarter, it had carried out another terrible ambush, against the Jo Goldenberg restaurant. A justice collaborator said that both attacks had been carried out by practically the same group. One fact was fundamental: from ballistic expertise it emerged that the ammunition used in the two massacres belonged to the same production batch of a Polish arms factory.

Also included in the investigation documents is a brief filed on June 14, 2022 from the Jewish Community of Romeassisted by the lawyer Cesare Del Monte, in which several were highlighted inconsistencies in the investigations. There were testimonies that were not in-depth, such as that of a tourist who had provided “an identikit of one of the two young people who had seen objects thrown in front of the Temple and made testimonial statements”. At the time, not even Al Zomar’s contacts had been properly verified. The document then underlined “the anomalous absence of the police surveillance cars which, until the day before, had been stationed in front of the place of worship”, also referring to possible attempts to cover up the investigations. The President of the Jewish Community of Rome, Victor Fadlun, thanking the investigators for the work carried out, nevertheless welcomed the news of the closure of the investigations “with bitterness”: “The dismay at the time that has passed and at the wall of silence, reticence and obstacles that have slowed down the full emergence of the truth for decades, prolonging the pain of families and our community».
