Today in the Assembly, the Albanian Opposition submitted the resolution for the implementation of the Law on the Use of Languages in the jurisprudence exam, as an initiative that stems directly from law students, who have requested respect for a right guaranteed by law.
“Despite the fact that Albanian students attend and complete their studies in Albanian at accredited universities in the country, they are prevented from taking the jurisprudence exam in their native language. This situation constitutes a direct violation of the Law on the Use of Languages and violates the constitutional principle of equality before the law. The resolution submitted to the Assembly, supported by Albanian opposition MPs, requires the competent institutions – in particular the Ministry of Justice and the Commission for the Jurisprudence Examination – to take immediate measures for the full and uninterrupted implementation of the law, ensuring the organization of the exam also in the Albanian language. We emphasize that the jurisprudence exam is a professional exam for the verification of legal knowledge and cannot and should not be used as a discriminatory or obstructive mechanism for students on linguistic grounds,” the announcement states.
According to the Albanian opposition, the lack of full implementation of the law creates an unequal and discriminatory situation, limiting equal access to the legal profession for an entire category of students.
“Such a practice is unacceptable in a state that aims for the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights.
“This resolution calls for institutional responsibility and concrete action, in order to guarantee equal treatment and full respect for linguistic rights, in accordance with applicable legislation. This initiative represents an important step towards strengthening equality, justice and the functioning of the rule of law,” the press release states.
