Spain Park quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth. Maxie Provost’s double followed by an error off a bunt put two on for Morgan Bryant, and a sacrifice fly got the Jags on the board. While the next batter got out, Reagan Roberts came up with a two-out single to cut the gap to 3-2.
Spain Park got out of a two-on, no-out jam in the top of the sixth unscathed but couldn’t capitalize on a two-out single in the home half.
Helena got a chance to finish the job in the top of the seventh thanks to a single from Schiefer and double from Cooper. Now with two in scoring position and one out, Baleigh Sprouse cleared the bags with a double for the 5-2 lead.
While the next batter got out, an error off an Izzy Vice grounder to short helped the Huskies cap off the 6-2 win.
Schiefer got the win with five innings, five hits, two unearned runs and three strikeouts. Lily Hensley came in to pitch the final two scoreless innings and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run. Cooper finished 2-for-4 with two runs.
As for the Jags, Roberts went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Provost was 2-for-3 with a run and Jordan Weiner finished 2-for-3.
Helena improved to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in area play. The Huskies will look to sweep the area series against the Pelham Panthers on Thursday, March 19 at 5 p.m. at Pelham High School.
Spain Park dropped to 12-7 overall and 1-1 in area play. The Jags will have a quick turnaround for their next area game on Wednesday, March 18 at 4:30 p.m. at home against the Chelsea Hornets.
