As someone without a company car, this is starting to hurt… might be time to rely more on public transport. I wish my work can let me work from home.

How’s everyone else dealing with it?

I’ve been using Petrol Spy to keep an eye on prices.

I see some at 2.43 now in petrolspy. They just keep pushing it up 5-10 cents every few days.

  2. Mainly complaining on Reddit.

Nah but seriously, I hope they mandate a WFH rule – it would make a huge difference

I’ve basically given up driving. I used to drive to work 1-2 times per week, but I do public transport every day now. I think I’ve driven my car once in the past three weeks.

  4. ComprehensiveSalad50 on

Paid 2.39 today for 91. Filled the tank and cost me $83.

I’m going to start taking the train to work

  5. rottnestrosella on

Driving slightly less but don’t have an option with work and family. Public transport isn’t available.

  6. Ancient-Honeydew9555 on

I have no choice but to absorb it since I work 45 minutes away from home and finding a closer job is taking awhile

  7. Absorbing it.

When I buy cars I always crunch the numbers on petrol hybrid or ev, and my number still stack up for petrol.

  8. Like realistically it’s a war and $20 worse off a week. Not a whole lot in the scheme of the other ways you get sodomised daily by prices.

  9. Historical-Shake-859 on

That 50c fare earning its keep.

You EV folks – genuine question, no salt, you ever run a carpool? The buses and trains are starting to feel pretty packed and I reckon you’d make some friends for life that way.

I am not going anywhere by car unless I absolutely have to – school drop off then to work, shops on way home, then home. That’s it.

I’m thinking of getting a sticker for my e-bike: “I’ve left the diesel for you, mate!”.

No discernible changes to traffic volumes or inefficient driving behaviour noted.

We’ve resolved to use the car as little as possible while this situation prevails, and it is a diesel people mover, so directly applicable to farming, trucking etc.

Most of the oil/petrol in Australia doesn’t even come from the Middle East – petrol companies are just price gouging as usual

  13. fluffy_101994 on

Trying to use a work car as much as I can. Thankfully my commute is only 10 minutes each way.

  14. Cautious-Bike4983 on

As a tradie that’s on the road all day every day I just have to absorb it, I have no choice.

I’m very lucky to be working with a PM in my department who said she has zero expectations for office attendance given everything going on, and said to direct anyone who has a problem with that directly to her.

I wish others had this kind of flexibility. It’s a tiny reprieve and one less cost each week for me.

Honestly just taking the hit, grabbing overtime and praying someone invents teleportation 🫩

  17. MrFartyBottom on

I filled up at $1.50 and haven’t driven since. Will do 40KM on Saturday for Mum’s birthday and might not drive again for months. If I do I wont consider fuel prices.I bought my 2010 Honda CRV 10 years ago and have only put 20,000KM on the clock in that 10 years.

  18. Transientmind on

That’s gonna be one of the lower prices city-wide, honestly. The 7-11 at the Gabba there is a decent one, pretty consistently on-par with the United a few blocks away on Main St, which is typically one of the lower prices in the city.

  19. Public transport. Bus up the road, train station a short drive away. Much cheaper than going through traffic.

  20. NotSoCricketGenius on

Some part of me thinks we actually have enough fuel and these cunts just wanna scam us

  21. Outrageous-Aioli-847 on

Petrol is considerably cheaper per L than people who chug bottled water… Majority of its bloody Melbourne tap water…

Federal Government could cut the excise tax, they screamed for the Coalition to do the same during the last rise, alas just crickets when they can actually make the decision…

  22. My daily commute is like 10km round trip so I’m just absorbing the extra 50c per day at this stage.

If prices continue to climb I will have to think about passing the costs on to my employer by stealing a roll of toilet paper once a week.

The bigger concern is everything else I buy going up.

  23. Expert-Bottle-6851 on

Govt should call for WFH wherever possible right now. No point waiting till shit gets bad. Decent employers should too.

  24. Definitely seemed like less cars on the road today? I’m effing Diesel so I don’t know that I’ll be able to afford to fill up much at $190 a tank, especially with my mortgage jumping up $300pm with the two increases. Definitely won’t be driving anywhere far on weekends. Got to catch 3 buses to get to work if I wanted to do PT.
    Fucking Trump.

  25. shopping1972 on

I just catch a 50 c bus everywhere, done it for months and now the buses are busy . Living in new farm bus3s are great

  26. Ive been leaving the car at home and taking the Victa to get the groceries. It’s very economical, runs for hours on five litres of 91!
The school run is a bit squeezey, but the kids will adapt in time

  27. -castle-bravo- on

My current job is the closest (10mins) of any job iv ever had, so I’m grateful for that..

  28. I’ve started doing the speed limit on the ipswich highway. Im pissing off a lotta people there.

  29. Affectionate_Turn_21 on

I just take public transport, I am pretty lucky to live in a spot where there is a frequent bus right at my doorstep, and the train is only a 10 or 15 minute walk away.

I think people should have a quick look on the public transport website, because sometimes you might not know about the buses in your area, as they stand out less than full train lines

  30. I get that petrol prices are annoying but what’s with the talk of not driving your car, changing jobs etc? By my maths with the recent increases to $2.30/L a whole tank is only an extra $30 from when petrol was $1.60/L before the war. Quitting your job and avoiding driving is a bit extreme, don’t you think? Are that many people’s budgets really that tight?

  31. PerceptionRoutine513 on

Petrol could be $100 a litre and my sister in law would still be driving her BMW SUV everywhere.

Life’s great when you marry the right guy, apparently.

  32. Brisbanefella4000 on

Anyone make the decision that there next car will be electric based on what’s happening?
I was thinking my next car would be hybrid but now I’m thinking of just going full electric

  33. Batmanforawhile on

From where I live to my work is more than 90 minutes by public transport (all the way into the city then out again) or a two hour bike ride so I’m pretty much forced to drive, I have no option to work from home. Coupling this with the interest rate rise I’m absolutely shitting myself about having any money in the future.

  34. Green-Occasion-3603 on

Definitely driving less, getting my 50 cent train to work. Reading more books which is a silver lining
