Data source: Google Trends (2004–2025), queried via the [https://github.com/GeneralMills/pytrends](https://github.com/GeneralMills/pytrends) Python library using Knowledge Graph entity IDs (topic searches, not keyword searches) to minimize noise from non-Pokémon results.
Normalization: Google Trends only returns relative scores within a single query batch, so all 1,025. Pokémon were normalized to a common scale using Mewtwo as an anchor — each batch of 4 Pokémon was queried alongside Mewtwo, and scores were rescaled using Mewtwo’s standalone baseline series.
Tools: Python (pytrends, SQLite, Flask), Chart.js, hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

I feel validated with Gen 4 being my favorite Gen

If you go to the Pokémon store the top ones are those that are being sold so this checks out.

So I know most of these. My question is why are all the games focused on newer ones when everyone still knows and loves the old pokemon

Looks like a power law distribution, the same as most popular words.

I would love to see the breakdown pee region. I remember years ago google did a global vote for everyone favourites, and apparently Japan had one a year later for themselves and there was a massive difference. Japan loved Oshawott meanwhile globally it was Charizard, Mewtwo, greninja ans the likes.

I don’t understand how Jigglypuff doesn’t make this list. Iconic.

I imagine the method of collecting this info (Google Trends) elevates certain Pokémon with complex mechanics. For example:
“How to evolve Eevee into XYZ” is probably a popular search.
“How to make Ditto breed a Pikachu with Surf”
“How to catch Mewtwo”
All of these Pokémon are popular in their own right for being cute, interesting, or powerful. But I think a poll of “what are your favorite Pokémon,” might see a very different result.

The lack of farfetch’d is concerning

Checks out. The only one I can name is Pikachu

I never really get why Ditto is so popular. It has a unique niche but it doesn’t really do much by itself and the base design is super basic.
