This is the 8:30(ish) Belgrave to Southern cross at Mitcham.
I have never seen the train this packed, at this point in the journey. And to be fair, this pic doesn't do the situation justice.
At least the environment might benefit from thesky-highh petrol prices.

They not happy about it either judging by the look on their faces
You really didn’t need to take a photo of strangers just to make this observation
you should see how packed the Craigieburn line is at peak hour times, and that was before petrol prices were high
This is normal commute for peak hour?
i mean, good.
Uh it is peak hour tho
Except when there’s buses replacing trains. Was going to take 2.5 hours to get to destination with a 8 hour full day. That’s 13 hours end to end
Tuesday is always been, many work from workers goes to office on Tuesdays
I only use the train Friday through Monday as Tuesday through Thursday is much busier.
I feel like the city bound Belgrave and Lilydale lines were this crowded in peak hours when I used to catch them 10 years ago?
AEU teacher strike today too, probably 10000 more people than most days heading into town
Whenever I take PT to work, it’s always packed. The only exception was Covid lockdown and travel restrictions
This doesn’t seem that abnormal? Until very recently Mitcham was my station, and I have experienced it being this busy any time after 7.30. The trains past 8 are always packed unless it’s a common WFH day.
I think it’s good that more people are using public transport, as long as the infrastructure exists to support it.
At the same time isn’t this kind of normal traffic for that time?
I mean it’s shit about petrol prices but good that public transport is being used. Now time to keep developing the system.
Looks like a normal day during peak hour.
Likely drop off week after next as school holidays and uni week long break.
It absolutely used to be that packed pre-covid when I was taking it, there would be days where I couldn’t board the train for several trains as they were already full.
Have you not noticed full carparks and more crowded trains Tuesday to Thursday for ages now?
Teachers are striking today!
I got to the station and couldn’t find a park. Thought fuck petrol prices must be spiking hard. Got to the platform and there was a sea of red with protest signs.
Have you ever been outside before. Why are you taking photos of strangers and posting it online
Downvoted for nonsense
First time on the train op?
Train busy at peak hour, that’s crazy bro
Agree with other commenters that the trains have generally been more crowded in recent times and this is not unusual at 8.30 at Mitcham, but I’ll just note that at my outer east train station, I could not get any station parking at my regular arrival time last week whereas I could just a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had to park ages away somewhere else since last week. I suspect petrol prices and fear of shortages may be playing a part, especially from the outer suburbs like mine where a drive to the city/inner city costs a lot more in $ and quantity of petrol than from areas closer to the city.
Never take the train, huh? Because this is just what normal peak hour looks like.
Grab a vline and then let me know how your metro service feels regarding crowding.
This looks like a typical capacity during peak hours
Uh so morning peak hour?
Thanks for sharing
Fuel prices wouldn’t be doing anything much different yet. It’s been this high before and realistically the cost per day extra is probably like buying a soft drink
It doesn’t feel like it. The roads are busier than ever imo.
Would have thought less people given the teacher strikes
This is.. normal?
Full fare being $5.70. I think its still cheaper to car pool than take the train for 2 people in the mean time 🙁
Until petrol hits $4/L it’s still cheaper to ride my motorbike in every day. Do not miss the Lilydale sardine tin
