Bulgaria is entering a new rail era as Škoda Group unveils its latest high-speed electric trains, marking a major leap forward in the country’s railway modernisation. This transformation is driven by the introduction of advanced four-car units designed for both suburban and regional travel, now undergoing testing before full passenger deployment. Built to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h and equipped with modern safety systems, these trains aim to deliver faster, safer, and more reliable journeys. At the same time, enhanced onboard features such as improved seating, climate control, and digital connectivity are set to raise passenger comfort to a new level. The rollout reflects a strong push to upgrade ageing infrastructure, improve efficiency, and meet growing demand for better connectivity, ultimately reshaping how people travel across the country.

The Škoda Group has introduced Bulgaria’s first four-car electric trains specifically crafted for both suburban and regional routes. These cutting-edge trains are set to redefine passenger travel, combining speed, safety, and comfort to meet modern standards for rail transportation.

Before reaching Bulgaria, the trains completed extensive dynamic and safety trials in the Czech Republic. These evaluations ensured the units adhere to strict European safety and technical requirements, confirming they are ready for operation across Bulgaria’s electrified network.

From 23 March, the first two trains will begin on-track testing within Bulgaria. This trial period, spanning several months, is a critical step to ensure smooth integration into the existing railway network. It allows engineers to validate operational performance, fine-tune systems, and guarantee passenger safety before full commercial service begins.

Production of the initial trainset was completed just 14 months after the contract was signed. Each unit offers more than 300 passenger seats and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, powered by a 25 kV AC / 50 Hz overhead system. These specifications make the trains capable of handling both short-distance commuter lines and longer regional routes with ease.

Passenger convenience and accessibility are central to the design. The trains feature ETCS Level 2 signalling for advanced safety management, climate-controlled interiors, and onboard Wi-Fi connectivity. Surveillance systems cover both interior and exterior spaces, ensuring secure travel for all passengers. Ergonomic seating and flexible areas accommodate passengers with mobility needs, parents with prams, and cyclists, making the trains versatile and inclusive.

The contract also includes a 15-year maintenance programme, fully managed locally. Škoda will oversee all servicing, ensuring that spare parts and technical support are readily available throughout the trains’ operational lifespan. Valued at over €500 million, this agreement represents a major investment in Bulgaria’s railway infrastructure, aimed at improving service reliability and passenger experience.

These modern electric trains are expected to increase network efficiency and reduce travel times. Higher speeds, faster acceleration, and advanced safety systems will enhance operational precision, particularly on busy suburban lines. Spacious interiors, modern amenities, and flexible configurations aim to attract more passengers to rail transport, supporting environmentally friendly travel alternatives.

Upon arrival, the trains will undergo final certification and system integration in coordination with the national railway authorities. This process includes comprehensive safety checks, technical calibrations, and compatibility tests with existing signalling and operational systems. Once cleared, the units will officially enter passenger service, marking a milestone in the modernization of Bulgaria’s railway network.

The launch of these trains represents a strategic advancement in Bulgaria’s efforts to upgrade public transport. By merging modern technology, high safety standards, and passenger-focused design, these electric trains are poised to transform the experience of daily commuting and regional travel.

Bulgaria is entering a new rail era as Škoda Group unveils high-speed electric trains, driving a major shift towards faster, safer, and more modern rail travel. These advanced trains, now in testing before full rollout, are set to transform daily commuting and regional connectivity across the country.

With these new trains preparing to enter service, passengers across Bulgaria can anticipate a significant upgrade in speed, comfort, and reliability, heralding a new era of connectivity and efficiency for the national railway network.
