A high-level meeting outlined new steps to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and expand defense industry ties. Details on joint projects and SAFE cooperation emerged.
During the meeting, Volodymyr Zelensky and Latvia’s Minister of Defense Andris Spruds discussed topics including strengthening air defense, joint drone production, and expanding cooperation within SAFE.
According to the Office of the President, the head of state thanked the people, the government, and the President of Latvia for supporting Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Key topics of the visit and further cooperation
At the meeting, they discussed in detail strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and provisioning with additional missiles for air defense. The minister noted the modernization of the Ukrainian military and the level of training of the soldiers. According to him, as part of strengthening the NATO eastern flank, Latvia is interested in learning modern approaches to operating air defense, including countering drone attacks.
Separate attention was given to the implementation of the PURL and SAFE programs. The head of state thanked Latvia for its contribution to PURL and expressed readiness for further support of this initiative and for expanding cooperation within SAFE. They also talked about joint drone production.
In addition, the parties discussed Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. The minister assured support from Latvia and readiness to help on Ukraine’s path to EU membership.
Among other topics – deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the Joint Expeditionary Forces (JEF).
