Arriving at The Carlton for the first time sends the GPS into a spin. There’s one entrance on Via Senato, a central thoroughfare thrumming with daily life, and another on Via della Spiga, the quiet pedestrian promenade lined with posh boutiques. But no matter, because each entrance is attended by doormen and women wearing hard-to-miss mantelle – dramatic black cloaks styled on traditional coachmen uniforms – who usher guests in to the new Milan hotel.
