Kosovo’s Constitutional Court came again to the temporary rescue of the country’s politicians on Wednesday, when it gave MPs another month to elect a President and so avoid the country’s third parliamentary election in just over a year.
The court ruled that a March 6 decree by President Vjosa Osmani to dissolve parliament over a lack of agreement about her successor has “no legal effect” – providing MPs with another 34 days to elect a new President.
This also gives the ruling Vetevendosje party more time to try to install its own choice as head of state.
Condemning Vetevendosje for not seeking a consensus over the next President, opposition MPs boycotted a session of parliament earlier this month that began two hours before the deadline to elect a new head of state expired, depriving the chamber of the necessary quorum.
