I’ve eaten my fair share and this top spot is well deserved. A little piece of time forgotten.

I used to live in the same building as Fried and Tasty. That was very dangerous.

  3. Had the fish and chips at Alex’s, and what can I say, brilliant!

Most fish and chip shops do a passable fish, but all use frozen chips. Chips rumbled and cut on site fresh then straight into the fryer are always ten times better

One of these is between my house and the train station, and opened in the last six months. I’ve been waiting for a personal recommendation but this will do.

  5. It’s partly because the cook in tallow. Everything I’ve had fried in tallow so far has been amazing. Hagen’s Brunswick East (also on the list) is also tallow. Other tallow places I’ve been to so far which have been great:
    – Austin Road Fish and Chips, Seaford
    – Glory Fryed Chicken, Ivanhoe
    – Nuggies, Ivanhoe

If you know of any other places that fry in tallow (or lard for that matter), let me know, would be keen to try.

  6. I like that Alex’s has gotten some coverage and all that, but it seems to have taken a toll on them to the point they have to close their shop to cater for unexpected additional customers. I worry for them that the short lived hype generated by social media will lead to additional costs and stock for them that will just drop away at some point when the sheep move on to the next hype.

Alex’s is not bad, but I find it a bit greasy.. it seems the local poms love it..

There’s another local in Altona that does hand cut chips/pcs and all that; and it’s better IMO.

  7. They visited Kalimera in Oakleigh and didn’t realise that the best chips were right next door. So close yet so far…
