President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a message today on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, highlighting the historical significance of this moment and its role in shaping national identity.

“On March 27 we mark an event that defines our nation. After a long occupation of our land by the Russian Empire, which tried to erase our identity, language and national dignity, the Union of 1918 meant a vital return to the family,” the head of state declared.

Maia Sandu stated that the act of Union contributed to the preservation of national identity.

“The historical truth must be known and spoken: the courageous step taken 108 years ago gave our people the strength to maintain their identity in the face of the subsequent Soviet occupation, to carry forward their traditions, the Romanian language, and to claim their well-deserved place as part of the free world,” the president noted.

The head of state also emphasized the constant support offered by Romania.

“Even if harsh times have separated us, Romania stands by us, with care and constant support,” she said.

In conclusion, Maia Sandu underlined the future objective of the Republic of Moldova:

“With Romania by our side, we will manage to fulfill our generation’s aspiration – to return to the European family, to modernize and to protect our democracy and peace.”

The Union of Bessarabia with Romania took place on March 27, 1918, when Sfatul Țării voted in favor of uniting this province with the Kingdom of Romania. This vote was a major historical moment in the process of forming Greater Romania, a state which, in 1918, brought together several historical provinces inhabited by Romanians.
