Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a protest with Russia following its strikes on Lviv and critical infrastructure, which also affected Moldova.

Details: On 27 March, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry announced that it had lodged a protest with Russia concerning drone and missile attacks on “Ukrainian civilians, critical infrastructure (also affecting Moldova), and UNESCO-listed heritage sites”.

“No war crime committed by Russia will be forgotten. Such crimes have no statute of limitations,” the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry added.
Background:
- On 24 March, Russian forces struck central Lviv with attack drones, damaging the Bernardine Monastery, a nationally significant architectural ensemble which is also on UNESCO’s List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection.
- UNESCO stated that it is “deeply concerned” about the 24 March Russian strikes on the Bernardine Monastery and expressed readiness to assess the damage and provide necessary assistance.
- From 25 March, Moldova is introducing a 60-day state of emergency in the energy sector.
- The decision followed Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system which damaged the Isaccea-Vulcănești power line – a key route for electricity imports from Romania.
- Earlier, as a result of Russian attacks, oil products entered the Dnister River, leading to water supply disruptions in several regions of Moldova.
- The Moldovan government has also recorded damage to infrastructure caused by Russian attacks and intends to prepare claims for compensation.
