Lt. Gov. McNally and Sen. Yager propose allocating $25M for a nuclear research center in Oak Ridge, aiming for economic growth and workforce development.
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — A funding proposal would allocate $25 million from Tennessee’s state budget to the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.
Lt. Gov. Randy McNally and Sen. Ken Yager said the funding would support the Y-12 National Security Prototype Center. The project includes the construction of a 120,000-square-foot nuclear research and workforce development facility.
The effort is a partnership among Y-12, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Roane State Community College and the city of Oak Ridge.
McNally said the project “is going to create new opportunities for workforce development, economic growth and research partnerships.”
The governor has recommended the budget change, but it requires approval from state lawmakers.
