ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Spain and Algeria are set to deepen their strategic energy partnership, with Algerian gas maintaining a central role in Spain’s supply amid ongoing regional instability.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, concluding a two-day visit to Algiers, described Algeria as a “stable, reliable and steady gas supplier” after meetings with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Albares emphasized that the talks underscored Algeria’s importance as a key strategic friend and energy partner.
Spain and Algeria are linked by the MedGaz pipeline, currently running at full capacity. Experts note the system could be expanded by an additional billion cubic meters per year to meet growing European demand.
Albares also highlighted a threefold rise in Spanish exports to Algeria in 2025, reflecting strengthened trade and industrial cooperation.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf praised bilateral relations, particularly in the energy sector, while the Algerian presidency confirmed that Tebboune plans to reactivate a 2002 friendship treaty with Spain, previously suspended in 2022 over Western Sahara disputes.
The visit follows similar engagement by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who announced cooperation between Italy’s ENI and Algeria’s Sonatrach on shale gas and offshore projects, highlighting Algeria’s rising role as a reliable energy alternative amid the US-Israel war on Iran.
