Italy Cuts Economic Growth Forecast for 2026, Eyes Early Exit from EU Deficit Procedure - News and Statistics

The Italian government has revised its economic growth expectations for the coming years, according to a report by Reuters. The current forecast anticipates the economy expanding by either 0.5% or 0.6% in 2026, followed by growth of 0.7% in 2027, assuming no new policies are enacted. These projections represent a slight reduction from the targets established the previous September.

The figures are subject to further revision before an official release scheduled for April 10. The forecasts do not incorporate the potential effects of stimulus measures the government is considering to assist households and businesses with elevated energy costs.

Speaking at a financial conference, Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti stated that the nation’s public finances are positioned to withstand the negative economic consequences of the Middle East crisis. He characterized Italy’s economic indicators as positive, though not exceptional, suggesting a position of relative strength.

The minister expressed hope for a statistical revision that would lower the prior year’s budget deficit to 3% of GDP. Such a revision would enable Italy to conclude its involvement in the European Union’s excessive deficit procedure earlier than planned this year.

Minister Giorgetti advocated for a coordinated response from the European Union to address the ongoing crisis and clarified that Italy is not presently facing an energy shortage. The government has committed funds to reduce fuel excise taxes through early April, but prices have shown little movement, prompting industry representatives to call for more effective actions. The minister pledged to consult with various groups to determine the most critical problems.

Separately, data from the first two months of the year showed Italian steel production reached 3.6 million tons, an increase compared to the same period in 2025. Production figures varied by segment, with long-rolled steel output rising year-on-year while flat-rolled steel production declined.
