Like a doctor telling you to make an appointment so he can tell you to keep drinking cigars and smoking liquor.

  2. “…. Wait… That’s it?” was my initial reaction.

I think that’s the biggest nothingburger of a national address I’ve ever seen.

  3. PRAWNHEAVENNOW on

Having the government call a national address to say “Live life as normal, don’t freak out” is far scarier than them announcing anything of substance.

  4. FuckOffNazis on

Is there anything more Australian politics than a national announcement for doing nothing of consequence?

  5. captain-jizz on

I had an awful feeling he was going to announce we were going to join the orange pedo’s war, so Im actually glad and relieved it was a whole lot of nothing in the end

could’ve sent me a text message tbh or make a Reddit post about it 😭

  7. My fellow Australians, carry on. Thank you for your attention on this matter.

If there’s one thing that covid taught us that we’ve been seeing in full swing now is that Australians will not do their part to help each other and greed is at the heart of the majority of people.

Excess purchase of toilet paper, excess purchase of pasta and rice, excess purchase of petrol people aren’t content with enough that they need.

    “Oh its a nothing burger”

So he 100% is warning all of us that shit can and will get worse internationally, and that it can be managed with minor adjustments to our choices.

This is actually really important because it sets the expectation to NOT panic and hoard fuel. If the projections are we can manage it, then we should make the effort to based on these directives.

What do you want him to flail and panic and make things worse? Or do you want to adapt to the international situation and be Civic minded for once?

Edit: They are literally negotiating long term supply sureties for Australia, not relying on some dogshit “only WFH” that would not have as much of an affect on the supply as you think.

Even friendlyjordies has a whole damn video released today detailing all the steps they are taking, which suprise suprise, is a lot.

I’m just glad there was no talk of us joining the war. That and a lack of restrictions means whilst things might be shit, they’re not as shit as they could be. Yet.

  11. To me, hes getting ahead of the war getting worse, especially his note about how the prices will be bad for months

Trump has an announcement tomorrow, some assume its a ground invasion announcement, so, the timing of this makes sense if that is the case, smooth it over

You know when someone says “We need to talk later,” and you’re stuck with that worst case scenario anxiety all day until it turns out that they just wanted to say something mundane?

This was literally what it felt like.

Are we going to ground private jets that consume a disproportionate amount of fuel or
are we just going to focus on the regular people who drive 20kms each day for work?

  14. I could imagine an entire Hollowmen episode based around the writing of that speech, watering it down continuously until it ends up as… whatever that was.

    *Can we urge?*
    *Ohh i wouldn’t urge*

It wasn’t entirely nothing, Karvelas on the ABC is right, they’re greasing us up for the budget.

  16. The only thing I can take from this is that they’re trying to speak directly to the country because the media is doing all it can to whip up a frenzy of chaos and also isn’t reporting any of the things they actually are doing to impact/help.

  17. blizzywolf122 on

Ah yes “live life as normal” cheers mate already struggling with the massive inflation and cost of living issues and absolutely loving the sudden meltdown of of fuel prices everything is just peachy currently

I felt like I’ve just been brought into my town hall at work and been told I’m doing a good job and the company is doing fine

The people who his words are directed at aren’t listening. Do you think Dazza in the yank tank is going to reconsider taking the 2.6 kids, the dogs and the boat to the lake this weekend? Do you think Kyle is going to skip the tiny-pp convention where all the commodores and clubbies do burnouts at midnight? Do you think the Liberal party and their constituents and the media are going to say “wow, what a balanced and meaningful message!”?

  20. >Use public transport if you can

Would love to mate, but the Sydney Metro has been down the last 4 weekends in a row and is again down this long easter weekend as well. Might want to talk to the NSW Premier who is a big fan of people driving their cars on toll roads.

Okay on one hand it wasn’t much, but after seeing that the US president and UK PM were going to do national addresses of their own today, I got real worried we were going to suddenly sign up for another Iraq 2003 or something absurd.

Frankly given the potential there, I’ll happily take a big nothingburger where we don’t get any more involved in a stupid war.

  22. This speech was a soft launch. I think he’s saying it’s going to get potentially very difficult. If he didn’t say anything now, it would look very bad later.
