TORONTO — Set in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta continues to gain traction among Canadian travellers seeking immersive, off-the-beaten-path experiences that combine history, culture and understated luxury.
Building on this momentum, a delegation of leading Maltese tourism suppliers brought the destination to life during a recent visit to Toronto, connecting with Canadian travel advisors through an intimate and informative event. Organized by VisitMalta, the gathering showcased a diverse mix of partners – from luxury hotels and boutique properties to destination management companies – each highlighting the breadth of experiences available across the Maltese islands and reinforcing Malta’s growing appeal in the Canadian market.
“Malta is an archipelago of three islands,” said Francesca Camilleri of VisitMalta, noting its unique geography and accessibility in the Mediterranean.
“People want a get-off-the-beaten-path destination. They want to get a curated experience,” she added, pointing to a growing demand for travel that goes beyond traditional sightseeing.
Comino, Malta
Comprising the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, the destination offers an extraordinary concentration of cultural heritage within a compact and easily navigable landscape. From UNESCO-listed cities to ancient temples dating back thousands of years, Malta delivers a depth of history that is seamlessly woven into everyday life. Visitors can explore fortified cities like Valletta, stroll through the narrow, honey-coloured streets of Mdina, or discover traditional fishing villages such as Marsaxlokk.
Beyond its cultural appeal, Malta is increasingly recognized for its luxury and experiential offerings. High-end accommodations, bespoke itineraries and curated experiences – from private yacht charters to culinary immersion and heritage-led tours –allow travellers to engage with the destination in a more meaningful and personalized way. The island’s mild climate, with over 300 days of sunshine annually, further enhances its appeal as a four-season destination.
Accessibility also remains a key selling point. Malta is well connected to major European hubs, making it an ideal addition to multi-country itineraries for Canadian clients seeking something beyond the traditional Mediterranean experience.
Malta’s year-round appeal is another key advantage. “We are a year-round destination, which brings different charms for different seasons,” said Camilleri, highlighting its versatility across travel styles and seasons.
