  1. # Without EU Accession, Poland’s GDP Would Currently Be 30% Lower

Without accession to the European Union, Poland’s real GDP would currently be **30% lower**, according to economists from the Polish Economic Institute (PIE).

    >

It was added that the gains from accession largely stem from the benefits of joining the **European Single Market**, which facilitated trade, international investment, and improved the institutional framework.

    # Methodology: The Synthetic Control Method

The synthetic control method involves constructing a **”hypothetical” Poland** composed of a group of countries (donors) that were at a similar stage of development and shared similar economic characteristics (explanatory variables) during the pre-accession period.

    * **Donor Pool:** 22 countries that are not, and never were, members of the EU.
    * **Process:** A counterfactual development path for Poland was drafted through 2024 and compared with the actual path of Poland’s real GDP per capita.
    * **The Result:** The difference between these two paths represents the gain resulting from EU accession.

    # Stability of the Results

“Our calculations are resistant to specification changes. For the purpose of this analysis, we estimated **396 models** considering various combinations of country groups and excluding selected explanatory variables. In every scenario, Poland clearly gained from EU accession,” the institute wrote.

PIE reports that the gain in 2024 fluctuates from **22%** in the most conservative estimate to **61%** in the most optimistic—averaging approximately **42% of GDP per capita** in constant prices.

“This means that the gain we estimated from joining the EU is not statistical noise resulting from the inclusion of a specific variable or the economic failure of a single donor country, but is **systematic in nature**,” the report concluded. *(PAP Biznes)*

  2. According to IMF, in 2025 Polish GDP Per capita was 28.5k USD$. Without EU it would be 20k – Level of current Bulgaria, Panama, a bit higher than Oman.

I was in Poland last year on a group trip. Our tour guide said that EU accession is in the top three of most important things to ever happen to Poland.

The same (or even more lower) is valid for Romania and Bulgaria.
    Edit: typo

  5. EU is beneficial for everyone in the EU.

Anyone trying to motivate a country exit is a fucking pest that only has their own interest in mind.

Its insane to me that there are people who deny that their country profited of being an EU member…

  7. Yes, joining a shared common market is good for ANY country. Good to be able to finally put a # to it though, at least over the past 22 years.

It will be real interesting to see how willing countries are to stay and support EU, when they are becoming the net contributors instead of net receiver.

Pendant ce temps là, je me demande toujours ce que l’UE a apporté à la France

It’s mind boggling that the country is Eurosceptic. At least the government and older folk. Without the EU, Poland would be next to nothing. I sometimes do wish they vote to leave the EU so they can see the shitshow that follows but I don’t think the Poles are that stupid. They are, but that would be a new low. Still, even with how well Poland is doing young people, including myself are moving out for various reasons. The birth rate is not going up, I’ll tell you that much.

Poland has own currency so can create own money compared to countries which adopted Euro. I would like to see how our GDP would look if we would adopt Euro and be forced to do austerity in 2010s.

  12. Same thing in Croatia. Before entry GDP was shrinking every year. 15 years after entry, and PPP is higher than Slovenia’s (who even in Yugoslavia days were the richest country in balkans).

  13. I am pretty sure every EU member will lose double digit GDP without EU Accession.

Brexit proved what happens the other way.

We are a country where the majority are retards.

  15. That’s a laughably low estimate and what happens when you only look at the economy in isolation and don’t take society and politics into account. The difference between Poland and Belarus is the EU, and that comes out at 75% lower GDP per capita.

  16. let me guess, they didn’t account for a possible realignment into the russian sphere if the ascension didn’t happen. even before the war ukraine didn’t even got above 5k$ gpd per capita. thats like 17% of poland now. So yeah calling bullshit on it would only be 30% lower.

Poland is paper tiger. Most poles can buy less than before and they know it. People in eastern European countries not in EU got much wealthier over the last 10 years than any in the EU except Ukraine
