PELHAM – Business and community leaders from across central Alabama gathered Monday at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena for a regional “Washington Update Luncheon” featuring Congressman Gary Palmer.
The April 6 event, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., was co-hosted by the Shelby County Chamber alongside six other area chambers, bringing together leaders from Homewood, Hoover, Montevallo, Mountain Brook, North Jefferson and Vestavia Hills.
Shelby County Chamber Chair Rux Bentley welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of regional collaboration.
“On behalf of each of these organizations, I want to thank you for attending today’s program,” Bentley said. “We’re extremely thankful for opportunities like this to collaborate on signature events.”
Pelham Mayor Rick Wash echoed that sentiment, welcoming attendees to the city and highlighting the value of hosting events that connect local leaders with federal officials.
“We’re always extremely honored to host these great events,” Wash said. “Please come back and enjoy our city.”
Palmer, who represents Alabama’s 6th Congressional District, delivered remarks focused on national security, economic concerns and ongoing efforts in Washington, D.C.
Much of his address centered on global tensions and U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran. Palmer defended recent military actions and stressed the importance of addressing threats before they escalate.
“For me, the question is not why, but why didn’t we act sooner,” Palmer said, referencing past attacks linked to Iran. “We’re trying to prevent a nuclear catastrophe.”
The congressman also acknowledged economic pressures facing Americans, including rising costs, while arguing that some indicators show improvement when adjusted for inflation.
“I know a lot of people are struggling with affordability,” Palmer said. “All of us are.”
Palmer pointed to recent legislative efforts, including tax policy changes and reductions in federal spending, as part of broader attempts to stabilize the nation’s fiscal outlook. He also discussed ongoing work to lower prescription drug costs and increase transparency in health care pricing.
