edit: was wrong, the night replacement busses are for xtrapolis 2.0 testing
edit 2: seems to be a mix of level crossing and xtrapolis 2.0 testing now tat I’ve looked properly

And the people here flamed me for saying I’m sticking to my car and I love driving 👀 have fun waiting 50 years while I’ve done my trip and returned in the same time.

To be fair, they didn’t say it would be fun. They only said it will be cheap.

The replacement buses are still free, OP. You can see the difference when you spend less on fuel this month.

Genuinely, what possibly makes this many disruptions? I feel like PT is a bus service disguised as a transport service

How come FREE? Nothing is free.

It’s a cheap and cheerful fun activity for the whole family to enjoy!
Don’t get lost on the bus!

They did announce this before free public transport was announced.
Free bus is still pretty dang good.

Already got approval for wfh for 2 weeks as it is during the day. No trains from north melbourne for the first few days. Demolition of tracks and putting up the span for the bridge. Trains returning both ways to the altona loop 25th April

They should at least get the Sandringham line running to North Melbourne or Footscray during these works. But they won’t.

Free public transport doesn’t mean project activities stop. This would have been happening whether it was free or not.

People commenting “it’s still a free bus trip” – the replacement bus service was already free.
I get it OP. It’s frustrating. Especially when they try cramming an entire trains worth of people into 1-2 buses and half the passengers get left behind waiting for the next bus to arrive and the workers have no idea when that’s gonna be
If you want to know the answer, /r/melbournetrains is a good place to ask.
If you just want to vent…carry on.
But “What could they possibly be doing for nearly half of the month?” is a weird question. 2 weeks is not a particularly long time for trains to to be replaced by buses.
Excellent way to stress test the system. Seems it’s not holding up very well at all. Anybody know if skybus is included?

Level crossing removal. Maddox Rd is getting rail over road finalised, and Champion Rd is getting a new pedestrian and cycling overpass installed and the road is being permanently closed to car traffic

And the thing is that this has been happening on the Williamstown line for nearly two years at regular intervals, with the bus taking almost twice as long as the train (and being twice as smelly despite not thinking that could be possible), and yet i have NEVER, not once seen any work being done on the track between Newport and Williamstown.
Nothing at all. No maintenance workers, no level crossings to remove, no leaves being picked up from the track.
It is almost certainly just a cost cutting exercise by PTV.

The simultaneous V/Line works are really the icing on the cake.

Yep!
Confirmed from 15-25 April buses replace trains first to last service, from Werribee to Newport.
So to get in (and reverse for home), you’re looking at Werribee (or your station) – bus to Newport train station – Trains from Newport station to Flinders St.
PTV is advising to add approx 1hour to the trip (each way).
I guess I get to travel up to 5 hours round -trip for free 🤙

That is free public transport in the most disingenuous sense. When there are so many disruptions that it is virtually unusable, it is not free public transport.

Works started and ongoing dont magically get done because network is now free and new users want a trouble free ride.

My boss just told me she spent $198 on a tank of fuel, so if it’s between $198 or a free train replacement bus I’m on the bus. Also since this is partly for a level crossing removal it will hopefully result in less disruptions in the future, as level crossings are awful for possible disruptions

Honest to God, what are people expecting? Expecting work to stop? At least its happening when its free. How much would people complain if they were paying.
Just be grateful youre not in Iran right now, with threats from Trump to bring your civilisation to an end only 12 hours ago. Perspective people.

I’m confused. The QR code [sends me to a page](https://transport.vic.gov.au/plan-a-journey/public-transport-tools-and-resources/planned-disruptions/werribee-and-williamstown-lines-disruptions) that only lists disruptions in the evening. Which is correct, the sign or the website?

To be fair, they never said it’d be fun. They never even said it’d be running! They [only said it’d be free](https://transport.vic.gov.au/news-and-resources/news/free-public-transport-across-victoria).
