I was craving pastrami on rye so travelled a bit (and spent a stupid amount) to get this beast, which is apparently an homage to Katz'.

It got me thinking, where else can one find a great (and authentic) Pastrami on Rye in Melbourne?

There’s a place on union st in brunswick that does housemade pastrami sandwiches as a specialty. Was very good!

Seeing a sandwich sold in Australia that comes with potato crisps (common in the US for anybody who doesn’t know/hasn’t travelled there) makes my heart weep.

  3. I don’t know about pastrami on rye but OPPEN on Chapel had the best Reuben’s 😍

I’m not sure i get these sandwiches.
Some are just meat-a-thons, 10cm of solid meat slices packed in bread.

  5. The one at Bowery To Williamsburg is ok, but fuck paying $31 for a goddamn sandwich.

Edit: The base version is $22 and to make it a double (i.e., a normal amount for a reuben) it’s +$9.

    **THE REUBEN** 22

Pastrami beef brisket, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and russian dressing on rye served with dill pickle

want something lighter? – try a PASTRAMI ON RYE with our house slaw and german mustard

    make it double pastrami +9

Check out Jimmy’s deli in Yarraville. Similar to Katz and massive portions

  7. Lenny’s uses a brand of Pastrami called Zaidys – you should be able to see all the places that use the same Pastrami on their insta.

Also Bodega on High in Berwick & Rubens Deli in Armadale do their own versions of thick cut pastrami that are solid.

  8. I used to get them from a) Neapoli (Reuben only) and b) Bowery to Williamsburg, but I’m not sure either of those places survived Covid…

Dre’s Deli on Glenlyon Rd in Brunswick does a very authentic new york style pastrami melt

  10. I reckon you need to get yourself over to Ruben’s Deli on High St Armadale – it’s the closest to a Katz’s that I’ve had. Their pastrami on rye is the classic that is just pastrami, mustard and a pickle, but they also do a Reuben as well.

Hector’s Deli. Add the Hectic sauce
Amazing! They have a few locations but Richmond is the OG for me.

  12. Not *plain* Pastrami on Rye. But Bowery to Williamsburg in the CBD is one of my all time favourite places to get a Ruben sandwich.

Nico’s needs some love here. Not sure why no one has shouted out Nico’s Deli.

  14. Give Butcher’s Diner on Thursdays. They only serve it on Thursdays. Hector’s has a decent one. B2W also.
