I hope the other EU countries follow this example.
Though I do expect that someone in Washington will once again start saying nasty things about the EU and about Macron personally- just as he did recently.

I need to follow this. If they pull it off, that’s probably the Linux fork I will want, as it’ll be the most like a traditional “old-school” Windows desktop as it can be.

And that’s what I want for my next computer, not Windows 12.

Good idea. The USA has become too much of a security risk to unnecessarily use their software. Office should also be removed.

  4. I’m just pouring one out for the poor French IT support guys who are going to have to explain to 55 years old bureaucrats why their heavily macroscripted Excel sheets from 2006 don’t work anymore

Not a bad idea, it’d also be nice to see a proper state-backed Linux distro and potentially an EU-standard distro.

Some European countries have companies within them producing distros but a proper state procurement drive and potentially even funding for a standardised one would be a massive boon to stable computing within the EU and even beyond, as a Brit it’d make it easier to decide what one to standardise on for me.

(Also yes UK government, this is a hint that you *should* have been hyping Canonical up in trade talks like the US does MS and also maybe using it as the UK reference distro)

If it goes through, I see a nice potential secondary effect: lots of people will get exposed to Linux and might consider to also use it privately.

Put your money where your mouth at.

I hate Macron and his government but at least he’s not just virtue signaling about cutting the cord with America. It’ll take time for sure but every step counts.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of a communal office where Jean-Pierre is forced to work with Linux after 30 years Windows…

Pretty sure I would learn a bunch of new phrases I didn’t learn at school 🤣

Rare W for France, i hope entire Europe follows in their step, in every platfrom

I think they will need to get this into education to really see wider adoption.

Windows users (including IT teams) are very reluctant to give up what they know.

I recently went Linux, de-googled and self hosted. It wasn’t easy, but now its all in my control. No war crimes involved, no genocide to my name. I feel free 🇪🇺🕊️☮️

Why didn’t the EU as a whole collaborate on a new Linux Desktop? Less cost, better quality

Didn’t something like this happen before in the early 2000’s? LInux and open office I think…

  14. The university where I work here in Denmark just moved the exchange email server they had physical on campus to a microsoft cloud. So we are sadly moving in the other direction.

  15. I think the most important aspect is to completely remove Windows/Microsoft from schools. Only then people will stop even consider it.

Daily reminder that implementing Linux is not “EU digital independence” because the Linux kernel is heavily reliant on American input.

Eu governments not using windows anymore will be a Superloss for the USA, especially since businesses likely will follow somewhere.

  18. I think this is great news both for all parties involved.

Governments don’t have to rely on American Corporations to do their basic functions and Linux might actually get a widely available distro that’s regular user proof.

Don’t get me wrong, most Linux distros are absolutely fine 99% of times, but when something goes wrong there’s no way you’ll able to fix it even as relatively savvy tech user.

Back when i used windows if i had an issue i would just google the problem and always find plenty of cases of others having the same problem and how to solve them.

With Linux on the other hand if you search for your issue you’ll either find nothing or you’ll find solutions that are meant for different distros and don’t work for you so unless you’re some Linux wizard you might as well give up.

  19. I’ve not been able to move to Linux. I tried it. But given I play old games which barely work to begin with on Windows, it’s completely hopeless on Linux.

Well. Not completely hopeless, other people have done it. Some of them, at least. It just seems to require a degree…

  20. France moving out of Murica-tech. France having its own AI models. My mom could have gotten French citizenship as a kid… why didn’t I get it?!

  21. Be honest: list your daily tasks and tell the ones you definitely could not complete even on a win96 or similar. Sure with compromises and creativity – but still.

Apparently, the lack of adoption of Linux desktop is down to pre-installation of the OS. I don’t think many people even consider, let alone install their own OS. Maybe some legislation to have a choice on new machines would help.

I use Linux for my server but I’d love to move to desktop full time but there’s still software that’s not supported which is a shame, if there was more adoption, these apps might eventually be supported.

  23. Why would you choose something free, more safe, and more privacy preserving if you can just pay money to a foreign company for them or their government to steal your data and spy on you?? Just why??? /s

Is this finally the year of Linux on the desktop? I want to see you guys using LibreOffice.
