The Prosecutor’s Office has imposed a prison sentence of five months and 15 days on a Moldovan citizen accused of abandoning an infant on the street in Ķengarags, Rīga, last August.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on August 19, 2025, at approximately 2:49 a.m., the woman gave birth to a child in the bathroom and did not notify medical personnel. Then, around 3:40 a.m., the woman wrapped the infant in a blanket and carried the baby out of the apartment, leaving the infant on a path between houses on Festivāla Street in Riga. Meanwhile, around 6:20 a.m., a resident of the house went outside, where he saw and heard a newborn wrapped in a blanket lying on the ground and crying. The resident brought the newborn into a warm room and called emergency medical services and the State Police.

The prosecutor classified the crime under the second part of Article 141 of the Criminal Law for the deliberate abandonment of a person who is in a condition dangerous to life and health and who is unable to protect themselves due to minority or incapacity.

The Prosecutor’s Office added that, in legal theory and practice, abandoning a newborn without assistance may also constitute murder or attempted murder. In this case, the prosecutor found that the child’s mother did not intend to kill the child.

After evaluating the gravity, nature, and harmfulness of the criminal offence committed, the defendant’s character, as well as the fact that the defendant fully admitted her guilt and exercised her right to cooperate under the Criminal Procedure Law. The prosecutor requests that the court sentence the defendant to imprisonment for five months and 15 days.
