Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of people at the gym (I’ve checked out a few since I do multiple sports) just tossing bottles with deposits. Do they seriously not know, or are they just so rich they don’t care about 50 gross?

  1. Most just don’t care/don’t have time. I do not earn that much and I do not give a flying f about this trash system.

  2. All machines that accept bottles with deposit are always full so I don’t bother.

  3. Or they don’t want to play garbage-men and carry trash around everywhere because the state extorted money from them.

  4. One thing is that they may not care. The second thing that this whole ‘system’ is not working properly in my opinion. Nearly every time you have to wait in queue to the machine. Some machines are broken from time to time or full. Sometimes they do not recognize the barcode.

Maybe in a year or so it will start working like it should, but I man not sure.

  5. Carrying an empty intact bottle around is really bothersome tbh, I’m not sure how that’s even supposed to work. I only keep them when I drink water at home.

  6. Shit’s been getting expensive for years, so 50gr is not a tragic difference for someone who’s alright with the idea that they can get it back, but just don’t want to.

That’s why that system is made, just additional tax. Some people will return money, but it always will be like 20%.

For plastic bottles we have plastic containers – they are huge, they are everywhere, everyone using them.

Only real problem what we have, mini glass bottles for alcohol, is not solved.

I had to stay with a big bag of bottles/ cans for 2 weeks until I went to auchan to get just 13zl.

I think the comfort of just throwing them, and not pile them up, it’s superior.

Idk, I have place to store em and it just became my monthly ritual to do a pilgrimage with big trash bag full of empty cans and bottles to return them, especially since I can go for a nice walk through the forest:p

  10. I live in Germany, where the deposit is €0.25, and people throw them away everywhere too; you can find several in every bin.
People drinking from small bottles or tins on the streets don’t bother with the deposit – they just throw them away 🙂

Yesterday i went to dino and had to leave them on the counter. I messed up the counter, a person and myself with sticky leftover drops from the bottles. Unless a machine would work i will never return them straight to the counter.

  12. I do not care. I’m recycling plastic since I was little kid, not for money but for environment. I do not care about the 50gr. It’s not about inconvenience, when I was kid I used to drive plastic and glasson my bicycle, because the recycling bins in our village were about 2km away.
I’m also ripping the caps off the bottles to throw it to bins for kids with medical conditions etc. so it’s not about inconvenience.

They are again solving a problem that didn’t existed.

As someone who doesn’t return the bottles: I don’t care, I don’t have space to store them and when I go to return them I may not need something from the shop at the moment. I’m not willing to spend more money just because I have to return a bottle. It never ends with just using what I got back, I always go and buy something I don’t need thus I refuse to go to any shop more than once a month.

  14. Sorry but I don’t see the value. The minimum hourly wage is 25 PLN.

If you want my tiny peanut brain to care about this, dutifully take out stuff several times a week, stand in lines, talk with the staff about the machine not working all this to collect 1-3 PLN at best…..

It’s not making a detectable difference at my monthly balance and I already have to sort 4 types of thrash.

TL;DR If it is not worth double pepperoni monthly I’m squashing it and throwing it into plastic / metal.

  15. Constant_Air9693 on

Yes, I don’t drink bottled drinks often so I don’t care about 0.5pln when I would have to spend valuable time to return it (without the guarantee I will be able to)

  16. Honest-West9013 on

    That system is stupid.
Current trash sorting facilities have already abilities to sort out bottles and cans.
Large volume shipments would be much cheaper than last mile logistics from place to place. In that case the company taking care od those bottles, cans would just send trucks weekly to trash sorting facility.

  17. It takes time to collect it, it takes time to wait in line, you have to keep it in mind, possibly store some in the car, later these don’t get accepted and hole process is slower than could be. How much you make per hour vs how long this bullshit takes all together. People throw away money on things like cigarettes, branding and “instagramy places” why this is so surprising for you?

  18. Whole_Sir_1149 on

The system doesn’t work well and my closest machine is 20 minutes walk away and there is always a line. Not that weird, considering most people do their shop after office hours.
I leave my for the homeless folk, they don’t mind dealing with it and I hope the stores will feel motivated to improve their process

  19. Impressive_Elk6810 on

Ain’t nobody got time for that. I’m the opposite to you, I’m suprised when I go grocery shopping and see people queueing up at these machines depositing bottles one by one to recoup a couple of zl. Sometimes I’ll manage to do a whole shop, and the person who was at the end of the queue is still waiting by the time I’m leaving. Genuinely in awe at their patience, I could never.

  20. sbormatocrasto on

I can’t be bothered returning them for the simple reason I rarely consume bottled drinks and the closest return point/machine is too far to justify wasting time for a couple zloty. I leave them on the curb near the trash bin, there’s homeless people always scavenging for them so might as well save them some time and effort.

  21. wydm rich? the daily MINIMUM wage in Poland is 160 PLN net, how many empty bottles per day can you ‘generate’? id say 2 on average, thats 1 PLN wasted if you are just tossing it away and that is… Not much. Not worth the effort at all.

  22. Hopeful-Session-7216 on

It was never about ecology, they just wanted to add another useless tax because they knew most people wouldn’t bother with returning empty bottles.

  23. freddie-pacino on

We just don’t card about those 50 groszy… it’s sad, we know we are losing money but who is going to carry those bottles around, go to the store where the machine is placed and get a coupon for 50 groszy?

  24. Unusual_Rhubarb_573 on

Because the Polish return system sucks while our neighbors in Germany are laughing. How can you have a perfect system right next door and not copy it? And I’m not even talking about the money you get back that’s just the bonus. I don’t know a single friend or person nearby who has anything good to say about this crappy system.

  25. IShouldbeNoirPI on

I’ve seen ditch 50m from ĹĽabka that was full of bottles of cheapest beer (that had deposit) so apparently we are ridiculously rich society/s

  26. EnoughStick5968 on

I purchased a Oshee drink from vending machine from ZDrofit and surprisingly it did not have the caution money deposit stamp on it. Not sure if it’s from old lot before the rules got implemented

  27. Having to log around empty bottle in the gym when working out then bring it back to home (I’m not calling the biedronka manager to return one bottle) to save myself 8 ish zĹ‚ a month is just not worth it.

  28. 1 – have plastic/metal containers for recycling.

    2 – introduce kaucja on plactic/metal containers.

3 – have seperate exclusive plastic/metal containers for recycling that is not easily accesible and for some reason does not work if you slightly dent or crush the can/bottle.

    4 – keep the kaucja.

I mean, it just doesn’t make sense. Recycling is recycling, if recycling is not working why are we seperating at our homes. If it is working, why do we have kaucja on things we buy to have a seperate recycling system :/

  29. The system might be a failiure but at least we Pay more for trash becouse company picking it up doesnt earn back some money via our bottles. Nicely done goverment, go fuck yourself

  30. This system is meant to enslave the consumer (once again), as they simply push the cost of the package on the consumer. What about the gap, when shops started adding deposits, but still selling products in bottles not eligible for a refund? What about the cases, when the machine throws „false negative” and don’t accept the bottle? You need to interact with the cashier, which takes our time. Also why the money from this scam goes to the companies, that are under the beverage producers? How transparent the system is? Long story short – it isn’t, so stfu you mere citizen and continue to live in this dystopian world.

  31. Diss_ConnecT on

The system is badly designed, or more likely, intentionally designed to discourage recycling and make you pay the tax or give up plastic bottles altogether. Last time I tried to claim my deposit I walked 2kms with a bunch of cans in my backpack just to see every machine in walking distance from my home being full. What’s the damn point to even try reclaim like 3 PLN if it’s so bothersome? So people just throw the bottles into trash and accept the tax, which even if you use one bottle a day is still just 15 PLN monthly.

50 groszy its not enough to make me work as garbate guy for part time. With all due respect to garbage Bros
