Can I park here? (see image) This parking area is in front of an apartment block – no signs, no fence, no barrier.

A friend said: if the parking is between the sidewalk(Bordstein) and the street road, it’s public. If it’s between the sidewalk (Bordstein) and the building, it’s private, even without signs and fence. Is this true? How do I find out for sure?

I’m a new driver in Germany and still learning the parking rules. Any general tips on how to tell if a parking spot is public or private would be really helpful!

    1. You can park in those spots as long as they’re next to a public street, don’t have any specific parking signs, no private parking notice, no mention of allowed car number plate(s) or special markings/obstructions on the ground, and don’t block any roadways.
