Georgetown Mayor Jay Doyle is leaving Sunday, for a trip to Finland which, he says, is to try to persuade businesses to locate to the area.
Doyle is making the trip to Helsinki with a group from Clemson University and the S.C. Forestry Commission.
The trip is expected to focus on the timber industry. Other than that, very little has been said about specific information concerning the trip, how much it is costing, and if the city is footing the bill.
GAB News sent Doyle a text Wednesday, April 8, asking if we could meet with him the following day – before a special city council workshop – for an interview about the Finland trip.
“Sorry, I am going to pass,” Doyle responded to the request.
Because there have been a lot of people asking, both in messages to GAB News and on social media, about the trip and its funding source, we tried to ask the mayor about it before the start of NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet 2026 Saturday evening.

We asked City of Georgetown Public Information Officer Cindy Thompson who said she had no comment but, she said, she knows people are asking about it.
