Norway’s gift boosts Ukraine’s air power, yet repairs and pilot training may delay frontline deployment. Timelines and partner roles remain unclear.

Norway announced that it would transfer six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, which will soon bolster the Ukrainian Air Force’s combat capabilities.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo on April 14.

The Transfer of F-16 Fighters Jets and the Future of the Combat Aircraft

According to Støre, these aircraft were not in active service in Norway due to a shift to other models. They are now undergoing repairs and are being prepared for use within the Ukrainian forces; the repairs are carried out in Belgium under an agreement with the United States and Ukraine. Other countries that transferred similar-type aircraft also ensured their operational readiness, but faced delays due to technical issues and pilot training.

“Norway has transferred six F-16 aircraft to Ukraine. These were aircraft that were not in active service in Norway, as we have had the F-30 for several years. So these were aircraft that required training and preparation to be integrated into the Ukrainian Air Forces… And I think the first aircraft will be put into service soon.”

Støre clarified that the aircraft are currently owned by Ukraine; their repair and preparation of the equipment are taking place in Belgium under agreements with the United States and Ukraine. Other countries that transferred aircraft of the same type also provided them in a ready-to-operate condition; delays were due to technical issues and pilot training.

The prime minister stressed that Norway, together with leading partners – Germany, the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries – will continue to press for the transferred packages to meet Ukraine’s needs, particularly in the area of air defense, missiles, and interceptors.

It was also emphasized that Norway has signed security cooperation agreements with Ukraine and is part of a coalition of European countries. This is the fourth official visit of the President of Ukraine to Norway. Earlier, the Prime Minister of Norway visited Kyiv about two months ago.

The transfer of F-16s symbolizes the strengthening of defense cooperation between the two countries and the hope of strengthening Ukraine’s security in the future.
