Hi I’m Canadian and I visited Georgia a couple of years ago. I purchased a John the Baptist portrait from a church and I noticed there is a sort of whole on it that seems intentional. Any idea what it is or what it means? Any info is appreciated 😊

access hole for a screw thats holding the glass maybe?
Is the hole in the wood? Or is it in the crystal?
Looks like wood was cracked so they fixed it with this “beautiful thing”.
Typically in important icons insertions in frame like this house an artefact, a piece of flesh of a saint, a piece of some kind of important scripture etc. That way the icon also acts as reliquary.
But I doubt your icon would have that, so maybe it is a vacant hole like that? Or maybe it has something more accessable like sand from Jerusalem or something with symbolic value like that.
I feel like you have a piece of a true cross or a dust from the spear of destiny(holy lance). You’re only limited by your imagination.

There’s a high probability that this sample represents soil from Jerusalem or another sacred site, or is of similar origin. I think the basic idea is clear.
